The WoW Gold Cap – How To Reach It

Did you know that there is a WoW gold cap? It has increased over the years and was once as low as 20,000g per server, but at present it is a staggering 1 million gold! Blizzard programmers overcame a huge hurdle that limited gold to 214,748 gold, 26 silver and 47 copper because it stored the data in a 32-bit integer. They changed the way gold is stored and were now able to increase the limit to something more in line with game factors.

Getting gold in WoW

There are two main ways to get safe WoW gold cheap. These are both in-game methods that are perfectly legal:

Killing old raid bosses — this of course depends a lot on your character, but a good tanking class such as a feral druid, blood DK or prot paladin will be very good at killing these solo. At level 85 it takes less than an hour to clear a place like AQ and each boss will drop about 250g. If complete AQ20 you will get 1500g just from killing the bosses. If you clear AQ40, that’s 9 bosses, so 2250g. And this is of course not to mention the 3-400g you will get if you kill and loot the trash, in addition to the chance of dropping certain rare items. There are ways to make this even more efficient. If you focus on Molten Core instead, for example, with a character that has mining, you can mine up the dark iron ore which you find in there (can sell as high as 50g per ore depending on your server) and you may even get the rare reagent “blood of the mountain” which can sell for 1000g per item for players looking to craft the Sulfuron Hammer. Factoring in drops and sales, you can easily make 3000g per hour farming old raids as a level 85.

Picking a lucrative profession — There are a number of extremely lucrative professions, which will let you make safe WoW gold. The only drawback to this route is the time you invest leveling a profession or if you waited till max level to pick something then the gold that you must spend leveling it on the AH. Let’s look at jewelcrafting (JC), since it is one of the most popular ways of reaching the WoW gold cap. JC starts getting very profitable when you can create the Cataclysm level gems. Blue or green socket level 300 gems are sold between 10g-300g on most auction houses, depending on the type of stat in the bonus. It seems currently that the red gems are often the most profitable, as they give pure bonuses to a character’s offensive main stat (strength, agility, intellect). Demand creates competitive supply, but because the barrier of entry is so high cost and time wise with JC, the supply is still limited enough to reap huge profits. In just a month or two, it’s possible to reach the WoW gold cap by leveling a JC character up.
